When I was in 8th grade, I watched a movie about a high schooler and his dad who did not know how to read and a volunteer who helped them. The fact that not everyone leaves elementary school knowing how to read really made an impression on me.
I am passionate about teaching people to read. It is necessary for people to know how to read so they can read to find out information and have more choices available to them in life.
I trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach. Some of my students have other challenges (ADHD, middle to high functioning autism, anxiety, low IQ). I am patient, encouraging and hopeful.
In addition to my formal training, I have attended conferences
Fall 2023: Joint conference between the Indiana Chapters of IDA and TRL
Fall 2023: Wisconsin Chapter of TRL
March 2024: Michigan Chapter of TRL
August 2024: Big Sky Literacy Summitt
