I have always believed that reading is a ticket to unimaginable worlds of possibility. While I have always loved to read, and I did "catch on" early as a reader, I was provided with a solid base of word work with lots of rich phonemic awareness and phonological processing. When I decided to become a teacher, after an early career in journalism, I realized I needed to be able to verbalize what I loved to do to share that with children. I began my quest for reeducation in the science of reading.

I am the mother to three grown adult children, one of whom attended The Churchill School in St. Louis, and he has made me a better teacher. I treat all my students as if they were my own children.

Experience :

• I am a retired Missouri public school educators with 30 years of experience teaching primary grades 4-12. I am not only certified as a reading specialist, but I am also certified as a gifted educator and English Language Learning specialist. I have taught courses ranging from AP English/Language/Literature and 1818 and IB programs in English to newcomers to the English language, and those who have specific learning disabilities in reading, primarily dyslexia. I have always also worked in tutoring centers as an addendum to my full-time teaching career.

Education :

• I have two BA degrees from Bradley University, one in Journalism and one in English Literature Secondary Education. My MAT is from Webster with a specialization in reading. I am in the process of undergoing OG certification to become a Dyslexia Practitioner I and sitting for the KPEERI exam. I also would like to finish my DA in Reading from Murray State University.

Orton-Gillingham Training Information :

• I am currently working on my OG 1 certification, and I have had some training in both Wilson and Sonday. I will be finishing my Wilson I certification next year. I am currently in a practicum with the Scottish Rite. I am active in IDA and ALTA and other organizations where I can continually professionally develop myself.
