New York, New York

Hello, my name is Ashley Morton-O'Rourke, and I am an Associate level Orton-Gillingham instructor. I am originally from Colorado, but I have lived in NYC for the past 10 years and this is home for me now. I love working with neurodiverse students and teaching them about how the English language operates, while maintaining an awareness and sensitivity to the nervous dysregulation that can occur when learning new and difficult material. My lessons are individualized and engaging to ensure the student is receiving the skills they need at a level that maintains a level of confidence for the student. My lessons are also prescriptive and diagnostic, ensuring that your students educational needs are being assessed and met.

Experience :

  • I received my degree in Elementary Education from the University of Colorado in Boulder. When moved to New York, I worked as a nanny for several years before working as a general education teacher. I found a lot of joy working with struggling students 1:1, which led to me pursue my accreditation from the Orton-Gillingham Academy. I worked for the Quad Preparatory Academy for two years as a Learning Specialist, specifically working with students with dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham approach. Now I am creating my own remote private practice to broaden the amount of students that I can help.

Education :

  • Orton-Gillingham Academy Accreditation 2021-2023
  • - Associate level training including 60 hours of course work
  • - 153 hours of practicum experience with a 6th-7th grade student with dyslexia
  • - 10 observations from an Orton-Gillingham Fellow
  • Teacher Licensure, University of Colorado at Boulder 2009 – 2011
  • - Certified Teacher in Elementary Education for State of Colorado.
  • - Semester-long student teaching experience in a culturally diverse first grade classroom.
  • - 183 hours of practicum experience in a variety of elementary schools and grade levels.
  • B.A. Humanities, University of Colorado at Boulder 2007-2011

Orton-Gillingham Training Information :

  • I began working closely with neurodiverse students as a general classroom teaching, facilitating 1:1 mini lessons to give individualized support to my students. In 2021 began working towards my Associate level accreditation through the Orton-Gillingham Academy, which I finished in June of 2023.
