The most common reason a child doesn’t learn to read is ineffective reading curriculum and instruction, rather than anything inherently wrong with the child. Consider that 50-65% of kids need explicit, systematic reading instruction. When instruction focuses on picture or context clues, students fail to make gains. Even with solid instruction in phonic decoding, many students need specific modeling and practice to learn to segment and blend sounds in words.

Reading skills are best taught by building decoding skills from the ground up. Amazing things happen when a child: 1) learns to build simple, real words, 2) plays with letter-sounds within words, and 3) reads decodable text for practice. Complexity is gradually built in using a sound-based approach, creating an easier learning path. Kids stay motivated with engaging, interactive materials and content-driven games. This means much more success and much less frustration!

Readers make further gains by learning morphology. Building knowledge of prefixes, suffixes and word roots improves spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
